“Are We Living Into Christ?”

John 2:1-11                         (New Revised Standard Version)

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

1. First impressions matter.
2. It takes an average person 7-17 seconds to create an everlasting first impression.
3. This passage is the first impression of Jesus for many.
4. Why was his first impression a miracle? What’s the big deal about miracles?

1. Jesus is Setting Us up for a Lifetime of Trust.
2. Miracles show us God’s power & authority over the forces of this world.
3. Through miracles, God was able to be in personal touch with people, through Jesus.
4. Through miracles, God renews fallen creation.
5. Renewal is continuance.
6. Verse 11 reads, “disciples believed in him.” Should be read: “…believed INTO him.”
7. Original Greek was, Eis- on, or into- a place or point (purpose) reached or entered.

• The Disciples were ready to stake their lives on him.

1. Jesus is establishing to his disciples and us that we can trust him with our lives.

1. Trust into Christ not because he was superhuman and could do miracles, but because of what he did through those miracles.
2. He showed us he wants to be personally involved with the renewal of his creation.
3. He made it possible for creation to be continued.

2. How were these a renewing of creation, or life, for you?
3. How did that contribute to the renewal or continuation of your trust in God?
4. How can we, as a church, use these as an inspiration to be renewed in our walk with Christ?
